I have sorely neglected my blog over the summer, but not for lack of shooting. I have been shooting constantly, it seems. I still need to go through my personal work from the summer travels, but in the meantime, you can take a look and photos I have taken with a telephone. Desert Noises Vinyl Release w/The Mighty Sequoyah/Lake Island/Sayde Price

TONIGHT!!!

Desert Noises are having a release show for their new album Mountain Sea tonight at Muse Music in Provo, UT. The show starts at 8 p.m.
I did the photos for the album art, as well as some promo photos for the band, and the design and layout was done by Jory Dayne. The record release is a limited edition run of 300, pressed in white vinyl. Very cool. A CD is also included with the vinyl (not with the digipak case).

Last year Jory Dayne, Jac Scott, and myself went on a road trip to San Juan Capistrano to shoot a story for UVU Magazine. Completely unrelated to the story, I shot photos all along the way from the car. Jory had the idea of doing a book with the photos, which turned into a collection of three books and an essay written by Jory. The series is titled LEGATO.

I am fascinated by the aerial landscape. I love looking down and seeing what the world looks like from above. I hate not getting the window seat. I hate it when it is cloudy. I hate it when it gets dark. I hate it when I should be sleeping and I just want to look out the window. It seems like all I have been shooting is out of an airplane window lately.

Manila Double Set R.I.P.

This week I discovered that the old Manila double set in Pleasant Grove has gone the way of EMB, the San Dieguito rail, and the original Dixie blocks. The church had not been in use for a couple of years, and I figured it was only a matter of time before it was torn down. Well, it isn't getting torn down, but it is getting a major facelift. It is being turned into an art center, I think.
Here is what it looked like this morning:

I have taken a handful of skaters to this spot over the years, and it has left most bruised and broken-- those that have actually tried to skate it anyway, most just got back in the car. The set is big for being only 9 stairs tall. The runway is pretty short and messed up with a crack in front of the stairs. The landing is rough black top. Not ideal.

Jon Hart ollied the set in the dark with car headlights... so gnar. Devin York 50-50ed the flat and down... third try and then 3 times in a row-- all for the photo, we didn't have a filmer. He later lipslid the flat and down.

There were also a couple of tricks that were not made. I have sat on these photos, hoping to return to the set and get the make. Now that isn't going to happen. So... I figured I would show people how gnar a couple guys got and didn't quite ride away. Here are the after-black-hammers that got away.

Brodie Penrod had this switch flip on lock. He put it on the ground four times, clipping his tail on the bottom stair a few times. After a number of bails, his feet couldn't take it anymore. X-rays showed he had actually "dented" a bone in his foot.
The aftermath ended up being the "Love It or Leave It" cover.

Matty Coles came down to Utah County to shoot for a SLUG interview. I thought Matty's rail skills were perfect for this spot. He went for it, put on the rail a number of times, couldn't pull it, and it got dark. Bummer.

These two photos are two of the gnarliest tricks I have ever shot. I have to say thanks to all the skaters for jumping down this monster. It will now go down in the lore of Utah skate spots.

The Type 59 Project

Almost three years ago I began shooting a series of skateboard photos on Polaroid Type 59 film with a 4x5 view camera. The process was a very expensive way to shoot skateboarding, as the shot is lost and $5 is down the drain if the skater bails the trick, or the expired film doesn't process correctly, etc.
Using the camera movements really made me think out my composition and where I wanted the focus to be in the shot. There aren't a lot of people shooting action photos with a view camera--if you have ever used one, you will understand why.
I kept sitting on these photos with the hope that I would get more shots done. It's been almost three years, so I am just going to post these. The tricks are awesome, and in some cases the never been done before or after the photo was taken.
Everyone knows the fate of Polaroid. This film is no longer available. I still have two boxes of Type 59 -- 20 sheets per box. I hope to be able to add to the series this summer.

The past couple months I have been working hard on a complete re-brand for the company formerly known as APX Alarm. Here is a little montage of the re-brand process and some the shenanigans that happen when you work really long hours.

The Esslinger Building, San Juan Capistrano, CA

The Esslinger Building was built in 1939 for Dr. Esslinger's medical offices. It was designed by architect Alexander Law of Los Angeles. It was the first medical facility in San Juan Capistrano.
I love the Streamline Moderne architectural style. I was completely enamored by this building. I circled the building shooting it from every angle, and then did it again the next day, when the light was better and there weren't cars parked in front of it. The white stucco and palm trees take me right back to living in Miami and seeing all the Art Deco and Streamline buildings.

The only cameras I took to New York were a 35 year old Olympus OM1, and a Canon G10. Sam told me I brought the only camera I need-- and an OM1. That was coming from a guy that shoots 95% film. Kind of funny. Here are some G10 shots. Film shots maybe tomorrow.

SLUG put on its annual Summer of Death skate contest series finale with a real street skating contest. Over a hundred skaters mobbed Trax, the city's public transportation, disembarking at various points around the city to hit up spots. It was pretty awesome. This story is also in the new SLUG Mag.

Dan Parkins is a UVU student that has been through some tough times, including a time where he lived in his car. He is now excelling in the English Department with his writing, and has received a scholarship.

Hilary Demske is a Juilliard trained pianist, and faculty member at UVU.

In conjunction with UVU's prestigious designation as an "All Steinway School", I was assigned to photograph said pianos for the magazine.

US HWY 50 spans the United States, from Maryland to California. The stretch across Nevada has been dubbed "The Loneliest Road in America".
While driving late one night, I couldn't resist pulling over to take a quick shot of the lake with the full moon reflected in it. The entire landscape seemed this bright to the eye. You could have driven it without headlights.
